Get rid of your old prescription drugs Saturday

 by

Orange County residents with expired or unwanted medications can safely dispose of them Saturday as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The free service, sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is intended to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft.  A number of law enforcement agencies across the county will  collect the medications.

The collection takes place from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. To view the list of sites in Orange County, click here.

Since the event started,  consumers turned in almost 500 tons of prescription drugs at 5,300 sites across the country. According to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 1 in 20 Americans over age 12 reported non-medical use of prescription painkillers. Among them, 70 percent got the pain medication  from friends or relatives.
