The free service, sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is intended to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft. A number of law enforcement agencies across the county will collect the medications.

Since the event started, consumers turned in almost 500 tons of prescription drugs at 5,300 sites across the country. According to the 2010 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 1 in 20 Americans over age 12 reported non-medical use of prescription painkillers. Among them, 70 percent got the pain medication from friends or relatives.
